Shanios is an immutable desktop Linux distribution based on Arch Linux. It provides optimised builds of the GNOME and KDE Plasma desktop environments. Like most immutable Linux systems, Shanios features rollbacks for instant system recovery, atomic updates through a custom deployment tool called shani-deploy, and Flatpak integration. The distribution's other main features include a blue-green deployment strategy using Btrfs subvolumes, preservation of system integrity with a read-only root partition, and enhanced security through AppArmor profiles, firewalld configurations, and full-disk encryption.
To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
Colour scheme:green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I've been using ShaniOS, the Gnome Edition, for three months now.
It's the fastest distribution I've ever used. Considering Arch as a base, it's quite stable.
I've never encountered any problems, which I honestly never would have expected. The installation was smooth and quick, and all the drivers I need were installed. It's a simple, immutable operating system, easy to use and operate from a user perspective. BTRFS is standard; software is only available from Flatpak. Only the Flatpak software in the KDE edition is in English and can't be changed or configured in my language (German), unlike Flatpak in the Gnome edition, where the software is entirely in German. Unlike Fedora Silverblue and Bluefin, ShaniOS is stable, fast, and error-free. As a regular user who has never made any changes to the system and who places high value on security and stability, ShaniOS Gnome Edition is exactly what I need. For users who are not fluent in English, I would not recommend ShaniOS KDE Edition, but rather ShaniOS Gnome Edition.
WOW! Just WOW!
Finally a distro that doesn't get in the way, simple immutable OS, easy to use from a users perspective, but sophisticated (arch based) inside.
BTRFS default, zstd compression default, no crust (noise), just clean installed OS, extras on Flatpak and that's it. The "Grandmother's OS)
Simple, clean. Just like a car. Turn it on, and drive. Bravo for the developers.
Installed on a Chromebook and on a Acer Laptop. Working like a charm.
No issues whatsoever. Comparing now to Bluefin, which is excellent, but has too much "noise" (tools and hacks)
