    WordPress Origin Story

    Using WordPress since 2009.

    I’ve helped translate WordPress core, themes and plugins into German, co-organized WordCamp Cologne 2015, held some really bad sessions at WordCamps and Meetups, and tormented users with know-it-all answers in the German support forums for years. Often baffled by the communication in the OpenSource project.

    My contribution as a moderator in the support forums has taught me a lot. I still don’t find it easy to hold back my own mood, but objectivity and politeness are prerequisites for good support.

    It was exciting to follow the development of the block editor over several years, which on the one hand offers users great design options, but on the other hand has also greatly changed the character of a lean software for quickly publishing personal content on the Internet.

    However, it is IMHO a fundamentally wrong decision to deny users access to WordPress.org and communication channels like Slack and Twitter and deliberately drag them into a legal dispute. I find renaming plugins and distributing them under a different name with reference to the GPL ethically questionable. The statement that WordPress.org “just belongs to Matt Mullenweg” has convinced me that I can put my time to better use elsewhere in future.

    I wish all those who are nevertheless continuing their efforts to develop WordPress every success.
