Virtual meetups on making WordPress websites accessible with live captions. This meetup has been officially approved for Continuing Accessibility Education Credits for maintaining Website Accessibility Specialist (WAS) and Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) certification through the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP).
About Us & Our Events
We're a global group of WordPress developers, designers, and users interested in building more accessible websites. Join us for meetups on a variety of topics related to making WordPress websites that can be used by people of all abilities. Meetups are held:
- First Thursday, 10-11:30 AM Central (5 PM CET) - 90 minutes
- Third Tuesday, 10-11 AM Central (5 PM CET) - 60 minutes
All meetups are held virtually via Zoom so you can join from anywhere and are live captioned. Some have American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation if sponsors can be found. We encourage speakers to verbally describe imagery for people who cannot see the presentation.

Building Your First Accessible Gutenberg Block: Emilio Dominguez
·OnlineOnlineIn this presentation, Emilio will take the mystery out of the WordPress Block Editor. We will move away from old-school shortcodes and learn how to create a custom “Notice” or “Call to Action” block from scratch.
Emilio will cover:
- Setting up a local development environment.
- Using the official @wordpress/create-block tool to scaffold a project instantly.
- Understanding the basic file structure (block.json, edit.js, and save.js).
- Adding simple attributes so users can change the text within the editor.
By the end of this session, you will:
- Understand the difference between the Edit interface (what the admin sees) and the Save function (what the visitor sees).
- Know how to use JSX basics within the WordPress context.
- Be able to generate, compile, and activate their own custom block plugin.
- Feel confident moving from “Classic” development to “Block-based” development.

Creating a Digital Accessibility Program in Higher Education: Jesse Loesberg
·OnlineOnlineAt the University of California, Berkeley Library, digital accessibility has become an essential part of providing equitable access to information and services.
In this presentation, Jesse Loesberg will give you an inside look at how the library built and implemented a digital accessibility program following a Title II ADA lawsuit and a consent decree with the U.S. Department of Justice.
Along the way, you’ll learn about the legal and institutional factors that shaped the program, including Berkeley’s unique relationship with the disability rights movement and the realities of introducing accessibility initiatives within a large academic and library environment. Jesse will also dive into the practical side of accessibility work, covering everything from developing processes and policies to collaborating with external vendors whose accessibility commitments may not always align with your own.
